The day began with a ‘Sonrise’ service on the beach and it continued with breakfast at the church premises at Baugh. This was followed later with an All Age Service at An Talla, Crossapol. Unlike much of Mainland Britain there was no sign of the sunrise. However we were gathered to celebrate the actual ‘Sonrise’. The fact is the Son has risen – Jesus IS alive!
The breeze blowing in off the sea did not dampen our spirits. After all many Christians around the world face much worse. So we made time to pray for Christians meeting in fear. How timely our praying for others proved to be – news had just broken concerning the bombings in Sri Lanka.
A welcome, hearty breakfast had been lovingly prepared at the church. There was breakfast cereals, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, bacon rolls! All washed down by either a warming cup of tea or coffee – and toast! It was a most encouraging time spent sharing with one another. Then it was time to return home before meeting again.
The All Age Easter Service was held at An Talla, the island’s Community Hall. It was organised and led by Laura and Becky, two of the Sunday Club leaders. The gripping theme was ‘Empty’ – yet full of confident hope.
Empty can be such a disappointment, a real negative: The cupboard bare, the tank empty, the bank account empty. But the empty tomb was a real positive – full of confident hope.
Several women discovered and reported that the tomb was empty. Jesus’ disciples later confirmed this fact – Jesus’ body was not where it had been placed.
The Biblical Historian, Dr Luke records,
Very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb,
taking the spices they had prepared.
They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.
So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus.
As they stood there puzzled,
two men suddenly appeared to them,
clothed in dazzling robes.
The women were terrified
and bowed with their faces to the ground.
Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead
for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead!
Remember what he told you back in Galilee,
The empty tomb is a real positive – full of confident hope. The risen Lord Jesus has the power to change our lives. His resurrection gives us a confident hope for life and the future. His resurrection has the power to reshape the world for God began a new creation on Easter Sunday.
We were reminded that because the tomb was empty we can have full lives – lives that are full of hope, joy, strength and purpose.
