Ursula Millar

Hello! I’m Ursula and I came to live on Tiree from Somerset in August 2013.

I trained originally as a nurse in Dundee and Edinburgh, before spending two years at the Bible Training Institute in Glasgow where I met Alan.

We moved to Cambridgeshire in 1973 then Oxfordshire. After being a full time mum to our four children for quite a few years, I returned to nursing. I spent several years working Night Duty at our local hospital to fit in with church and family responsibilities, before spending five years in the Eye Outpatient Department. Latterly in Somerset I worked alongside Alan as a Pastoral Assistant.

We first visited Tiree on a day trip in 2011 and returned for a week’s holiday in 2012. The house that we hired in 2012 is now our permanent home. Both of us are Scots by birth but never thought we would return to the land of our birth, fearing that we would suffer from culture shock. There are so many positives about Tiree – the only disadvantage is the distance from our family.

Retirement can bring many opportunities and challenges. Nevertheless, in bringing us to Tiree, as God has guided us in the past, so he will in the present. Since coming to Tiree, we have begun to feel part of the community and have very much appreciated the fellowship at the Baptist Church.

As for likes and dislikes, I enjoy walking (a good way of burning off all those cakes we’ve had since coming to Tiree!) and adore the island’s beaches but am not so enthusiastic about ironing….
